Hello. My name is Steve Shipley and I am a freelance art director and graphic designer.
I have worked in design studios in London and throughout southeast England for over 20 years and created artwork for clients of all shapes and sizes, from household name brands, to charities and start-ups. It has given me the opportunity to develop a broad skill set and work across a wide range of disciplines. These include advertising, branding, websites, packaging, exhibition spaces, tv commercials, motion graphics and more.
After graduating in graphic design (illustration) from Norwich School of Art and Design (now NUA), I blagged my first ‘proper’ job at a print publishing company designing and editing magazines. I was immediately obsessed and it sparked my passion for editorial design. The simple combination of words and pictures felt like a natural progression from my early fascination with record sleeves and comics (anyone remember Roy of the Rovers?). Since then I have worked on countless books, newspapers, catalogues, leaflets, brochures and have self-published print and digital magazines.
It’s important to acknowledge that my work is almost always a joint effort and I’ve been fortunate to work with many talented designers, photographers, developers, writers and perhaps most importantly, some wonderful clients. This collaboration is the part of the process I enjoy the most. Problem solving, offering ideas, taking feedback and working toward a shared purpose.
